Orthodontic Appliances

Board-certified orthodontist Dr. Sam Kadan uses several orthodontic appliances to give every patient in the Bucks County and Philadelphia area their best possible smile. The orthodontic appliances are used for children, teenagers and adults at our Chalfont, Doylestown, and Harleysville offices.

Dr. Sam Kadan, a board-certified orthodontist, is able to help every patient have a great, healthy smile by integrating a combination of orthodontic appliances into his treatments plans.

Nance Appliance

If Dr. Kadan determines that your upper molars will move forward or rotate, he will use a Nance appliance. The appliance is used after you have expanders or use other appliances. The Nance appliance moves the molars backward while the bicuspids grow into place.

The Nance appliance is comprised of two bands and a wire. The bands are cemented to your molars, and the wire goes across the roof your mouth. A pad is placed along the wire to prevent rubbing and irritation.

Caring for your Nance appliance involves brushing around the bands each day and avoiding chewy foods that can loosen the appliance.

Appliances for Finger and Thumb Sucking

Children that suck their thumbs or finger as their primary teeth erupt are at risk for developing orthodontic issues that require treatment. Dr. Kadan may recommend an appliance for finger and thumb sucking that helps your child break the habit. The appliance, known as a “fixed palatal crib,” is put on the backside of your child’s upper teeth. Semicircular wires are attached to bands on the molars. Most children stop sucking their thumbs and fingers after just one day.

Orthognathic Appliance

Our orthognathic appliances are designed to promote the healthy development of the jaw and for children with cleft palates. Some appliances help the upper palate expand to make more room for the adult teeth. Other orthognathic appliances will correct overbites and other bite problems. Orthognathic appliances are recommended in cases where correction can be achieved without orthognathic surgery.

Pendex Appliance

Our Pendex appliance, also known as a Pendulum appliance, has an expansion screw that is used to widen the upper palate to correct problems with the bite, such as Class II malocclusions. The appliance has a plastic “button” that touches the roof of your mouth. The button has a hole that accommodates a special key. Dr. Kadan will provide instructions on how to insert the key into the button and turn it to apply pressure to the upper palate. The Pendex appliance is worn for three to six months.
