At Sam Kadan Orthodontics, we understand that unexpected events happen. Our emergency info provides the guidance you need during these times. Board-certified orthodontist Dr. Sam Kadan is here to respond to the emergencies and concerns of his patients in the Bucks County and Philadelphia area.
What Do I Do in Case of an Emergency?
When you discover that a piece of your braces is broken or loose, or if you lose a retainer or Invisalign® aligner, we are here to help. Simply contact our office right away and we will schedule an appointment with Dr. Kadan. Our staff is also able to provide instructions on ways that you can fix the problem in the meantime.
A loose bracket is one that is not properly adhered to your tooth. If you find a loose bracket, contact our office, and we will get you in at your earliest convenience. We may advise you to cut the connecting wire with a sterilized set of nail clippers. To remedy the problem permanently, Dr. Kadan may replace the connecting wire or replace the broken bracket.
Broken and bent wires can irritate your gums, lips or cheeks. You can use a cotton swab or pencil eraser to push the wire into a better position. If you are unable to move the wire or easily access it, place a piece of wax or cotton over it to protect your gums, cheeks and lips. If this does not resolve the problem, cut the wire with a sterilized set of clippers. After you take these steps, contact us to schedule an appointment.
Lost Separators or Spacers
Orthodontic spacers may dislodge from between your teeth either by accident or when the teeth have reached the desired spacing. In most cases, losing a spacer is not a significant problem, but we encourage you to contact us to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Kadan to ensure that your overall treatment plan is not affected.
Discomfort Associated with Orthodontic Treatment
Mild to moderate discomfort is normal when your braces are first put on and after each adjustment appointment. We recommend taking over-the-counter medications, such as non-aspirin pain relievers or acetaminophen. Warm compresses, such as a heating pad covered with a towel or a washcloth that is soaked in warm water can also help.
If you experience trauma to your face that loosens or dislodges a tooth, your braces will hold the tooth in place until you can seek medical attention. If your soft tissue, such as a cheek or the lips, are caught in your braces, have someone help you pull the tissue away from the braces. You should visit the emergency room or your family physician as quickly as possible to be evaluated and treated.
You should contact our office immediately if you have one or more teeth that are loose or have shifted out of position. If your tooth is completely dislodged, you need medical attention within 30 minutes.
Here are some steps to take for a dislodged tooth:
- Pick the tooth up by the crown (top) and not the root. The root is much easier to damage.
- Gently rinse the tooth under water, but do not use any other types of cleansers.
- Place the tooth back in the socket inside your mouth. Hold it in place with your fingers and wrap it with a clean piece of cloth or gauze. Gently bite down on the tooth to control bleeding.
- If the tooth cannot be inserted into the original socket, place it in a cup of water or milk. You can also hold it in your mouth. The goal is to keep the tooth moist.
